![]() I think Pizzolatto knows that the core of this show is the relationship between Marty and Rust. We know it’s Errol, but we don’t know exactly how the ring works. The ending of the show was controversial, for some viewers. You’re always wondering who’s committed the crime, and the twists and turns are surprising and perfectly placed. Best of all, the show is just a good old fashioned mystery. ![]() He grapples with cultural and religious themes throughout the show. Rust and Marty are so well realized by the end of the show, that you feel for both of them in different ways. True Detective’s writer Nic Pizzolatto is a genius. I can’t speak much to do this without giving it away, so I’ll just say this. The writers also know when to incorporate humor, and it hits really well.įinally – the plot. They’re antithetically different philosophically, and it makes for fascinating exchanges between the two. They have their fair share of monologues and one liners that impress, but it’s the banter and chemistry between the two that really separate True Detective from your normal buddy cop drama. It’s haunting and captures the essence of the sure extremely well.Īs for the performances, it should be no surprise that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson knock it out of the park. I appreciate that the director didn’t feel the need to rely on darkness or ordinary tactics to develop tension and suspense – instead it’s accomplished through excellent story telling and production.Īnother side note – the opening sequence to True Detective is one of my favorite opening sequences on any television show. There are a couple of action scenes that take place in broad daylight, and they happen to be some of the most terrifying scenes in the entire series. One episode, in particular, features an eight minute tracking shot through the Louisiana housing projects that is absolutely breathtaking. ![]() The sweeping views of the Louisiana landscapes, along with the beautiful cinematography during tense action scenes are captivating. It feels like another character in the story. The show takes you to marshes, rivers, and the housing projects of Louisiana. It takes place in Louisiana, and the show producers make you feel so present in that environment. One of the first things that stood out to me about the show was its acute awareness of the setting. The tension and drama in the show is heavily reliant on its twists and turns. If you haven’t watched it yet, I would recommend doing the same when watching. It had been a while since it came out, so I also had to stay off the internet to avoid spoilers. Given that it was an HBO show, I had high expectations. The series two detectives, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart (respectively played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson) as they try to find the killer of Dora Lange. I recently finished watching the HBO crime drama, True Detective.
